Documentation Chapter 06

Remote Access

Reach Howland when you are not at home.

Use your own network away from home

You need a private network on your own devices, such as Tailscale or WireGuard.

  1. Set up a private network.

Install it on your computer and on your phone. Follow the steps from the maker of the one you choose.

  2. Open Howland on your computer.

    Leave it open.

  3. Turn on the private network on your phone.

Wait until it shows that it is connected.

  4. Scan the code, or type the address.

Use the code or address that Howland shows on your computer.

You can instead forward a port on your home router to your computer. Do this only if you understand what it opens to the internet.
